#BlackGirlJoyChallenge

The Pete & Thomas Foundation has collaborated with the Southern Black Girls & Women’s Consortium to launch the #BlackGirlJoyChallenge, an initiative that empowers young Black women to create projects centered on mental health and wellness. For International Day of the Girl on October 11, 2023, the Pete & Thomas Foundation and the Southern Black Girls & Women’s Consortium launched a special edition of the #BlackGirlJoyChallenge.

In December 2023, We hosted a zoom and surprised 100 girls and young women that they have been selected to receive a micro-grant to bring joy to their community with a focus on mental health and wellness.

This year 100 young women were awarded micro-grants to bring their ideas to life, with a focus on community impact and self-care. Building on the success of previous years, the 2024 iteration continues to showcase these innovative projects, providing a platform for young women to promote joy and mental health awareness within their communities.

More to come on these incredible projects!

Celebrate Women’s History Month with the Pete and Thomas Foundation and Southern Black Girls by watching the winners of the #BlackGirlJoyChallenge projects come to life. 100 young women were awarded $550 microgrants to promote joy in the community through mental health awareness and wellness. Thank you Nike for supporting this initiative. Watch the full recap video now.

Kristin

Kristin is making a huge impact in her community by tackling the mental health crisis in Arkansas. For her Black Girl Joy Challenge, she partnered with local organizations to host a Mental Health Fair at the Saline County Library branches. Kristin had organizations that specialize in mental health resources and behavioral sciences talk to attendees and even provided gift boxes that contained a guided journal and informational cards.

Mila

Mila dedicated her Black Girl Joy Challenge project to putting together boxes for young Black girls who have experienced mental health challenges from inpatient hospital care to bullying. The boxes included a journal, fidget toys, positive messages, and more. Mila hand delivered these boxes so the girls would know people in their community are thinking about them and they have support. She already has big goals for the future and established the MHBoxes, a non-profit organization that delivers boxes to black girls who are admitted to mental health facilities and receive support from community organizations.

ZaNaria

ZaNaria dedicated her Black Girl Joy Challenge project to nurturing and cultivating a space for other young women to feel inspired and encouraged. ZaNaria, hosted a “Mind Your Body Wellness Festival” for her community in Houston, Texas. Her entire project was dedicated to fostering a secure and empowering environment where women of all generations come together to celebrate body wellness and self improvement.

Milan

For Milan’s Black Girl Joy Challenge, she hosted a half-day summit called “Winning When You Play Golf: How to Overcome Overthinking & Performance Anxiety When Golfing" at the Bobby Jones Golf Course. Mila incorporated yoga/mobility stretches for golfers, deep breathing techniques for athletes, and a series of inspirational speakers and affirmations that would motivate her audience during the summit.

Joy Is Our Journey Bus Tour

On August 21, 2022, the Pete & Thomas Foundation partnered with the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium’s inaugural #JoyIsOurJourney Dream Bus Tour. The bus made 10 stops throughout the South to bring joy to Black girls and women and with the foundation’s support were able to add Houston as a stop. Young women & community members participated in an array of activities such as cosmetic chemistry, painting, hair braiding, and yoga, as well as workshops on entrepreneurship, journaling, mental health well-being conversations, and more.

Along the way, we were able to help organize a water distribution in Jackson, Mississippi, giving away 8000 bottles of water and 300+ Sunday dinners to spread JOY in the midst of the water crisis.

At Texas Southern University in Houston, over 300 girls & young women attended the Dream Village, an event hosted that provided a studio with workshops about wellness, manifesting our dreams, and journaling.

Ultimately, our founder, Megan Thee Stallion, was acknowledged for her work to empower Black women with an official Certificate of Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Jackson Lee.

“Our partnership creates safe spaces to celebrate unlimited, unabashed Black girl joy.”
